Choosing the Right Substrate for Every Strain
August 18, 2026 · By NC Mycology

Substrate = fuel
Your substrate is the food your mycelium converts into fruit. Match it to the strain and you'll see faster colonization and heavier flushes.
The big three
- Grain spawn — rye, millet, or WBS. The expansion stage that carries your culture into bulk.
- Straw — cheap and fast for oysters (Pearl, Blue, Pink).
- Supplemented hardwood — Master's Mix (hardwood + soy hull) for Lion's Mane, Shiitake, and King Oyster.
Keep it clean
Whatever you choose, hydrate to field capacity and pasteurize or sterilize appropriately. Contamination almost always traces back to substrate prep.
